Fibromyalgia

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

In Denver we see patients with fibromyalgia that can be just as taxing mentally as it is physically. Part of the reason for this is that there is no known cause of fibromyalgia. Oftentimes, knowing what caused your condition can alleviate a lot of stress associated with it. And secondly, being in pain constantly can be exhausting. Continually worrying about what you can and cannot do, whether the things you love to do are going to cause you pain, or how long after you do something you are going to be in pain for is emotionally tiring. Therefore, managing your fibromyalgia involves healing physically and mentally.
It has been shown that people with chronic pain are more cautious in performing everyday activities than people who do not experience chronic pain, even after their condition is resolved. There is apprehension in fully embracing things that you love to do out of fear that it might cause pain.

Chiropractic and Fibromyalgia

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

While Fibromyalgia may be a complex disorder without a cure, the Denver Fibromyalgia Health Center at Care Chiropractic has helped many patients by reducing the symptoms and improving their quality of life.

Even though healers and then medical professionals have been treating this malady since the seventeenth century, the American Medical Association (AMA) did not recognize it as a diagnosis until 1987. There is still debate today about the validity of the disorder by some conventional physicians because there is no test that pinpoints or diagnoses the disorder. However, it only takes being in the presence of one sufferer for a short period of time to see the reality.

The latest research shows, Fibromyalgia is rooted in the central nervous system. Documentation has shown that patients with this disorder have abnormalities in the chemical compounds (neurotransmitters) that transmit nerve impulses. There is also evidence of considerably more nerve growth, than in those without it. This indicates interference with the nervous system and hypersensitivity. The whole principle of chiropractic care revolves around the idea that a patient’s health is controlled by the state of their nervous system. Dr. Visentin D.C., who is an expert in this area, is especially equipped to help patients reduce their symptoms and find a better way of life.

Chiropractors as Diagnosticians

Fibromyalgia sufferers go an average of five years before getting a correct diagnosis with conventional medicine. More than half of these patients receive a misdiagnosis that could lead to needless invasive treatment such as surgery. Many patients find the necessary relief from chiropractic care because the symptoms affect the entire body and doctors of chiropractic take a holistic approach.

This disorder affects each patient differently, so communication is the key to diagnosing the needs of each individual. During the initial consultation, Dr. Visentin D.C. goes over a patient’s health history and performs a physical assessment. The assessment will include an evaluation of spinal alignment and a test of 18 specific tender points. These points will generally not hurt on a healthy person unless enough pressure is applied to make the base of the assessor’s thumbnail turn white. Fibromyalgia patients will feel pain when much less pressure is applied. .

Fibromyalgia Care

At the Denver Fibromyalgia Health Center, Dr. Visentin D.C. uses additional tests to adjust a patient’s neck and spine. Once the spine is back in alignment, the pain symptoms felt by the patient anywhere in the body usually diminish or disappear entirely. If the pain can be alleviated, other symptoms such as trouble sleeping, fatigue, and depression tend to also go away. Changes in diet, lifestyle, and sleep hygiene may also be suggested to improve the patient’s overall health.

The Denver Fibromyalgia Health Center and Dr. Visentin D.C have helped many patients by reducing symptoms and improving their quality of life using chiropractic care. If you have questions or would like an examination, call (303) 394-CARE (2273).

What is Fibromyalgia?

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

Fibromyalgia is prevalent across the US.  Denver is no different.  In our Denver Fibromyalgia Health Center we see patients often that have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is a condition that involves diffuse, body-wide pain in muscles, and other soft tissues. The cause is unknown but can be managed very effectively through conservative treatments.

How do I manage my fibromyalgia?

  1. Get out and move around. Chronic pain can be induced by inactivity. A study published in 2009 in the Journal of Gerontology showed that extreme inactivity in the form of 3 weeks of bed rest had the same physiologic results as 40 years of aging. There was a major decline in both cardiovascular fitness and oxygen utilization after just 3 weeks of bed rest. Exercise not only enhances your endurance, but supplies all your muscles with increased oxygen so they remain strong and healthy. …Continue Reading

IS THERE A CURE FOR FIBROMYALGIA?

It is most likely that effective treatments may be devised before a cure is discovered.

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT CAUSES FIBROMYALGIA?

No, fibromyalgia was once thought to be an inflammatory condition but no inflammation or arthritis has been found.  It has been also called a psychiatric illness, but when depression and anxiety occur they are the result of the many symptoms of fibromyalgia rather than the cause.

WILL MY FIBROMYALGIA GET WORSE?

Although the pain and fatigue of fibromyalgia can be quite severe and can be exacerbated by certain health conditions, they do not result in the development of any deformities or lead to death.

CAN MY FAMILY CATCH FIBROMYALGIA FROM ME?

There is no evidence that fibromyalgia is caused by a virus or bacteria, or that it can be spread from one person to another by physical contact.

IS THERE A SURGERY TO HELP FIBROMYALGIA?

The American Association of Neurological Surgeons has issued a statement saying, “There is no scientific evidence that chronic fatigue syndrome (or fibromyalgia) is a neurological disorder or that it requires surgical intervention.

Four Ways to Improve Your Fibromyalgia

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

In our Denver Fibromyalgia Health Center we have found that these are four good steps that anyone with fibromyalgia can take to help improve their condition.

1. Cut down on the sugar – Too much sugar can put your body into an acidic and inflammatory state, which heightens and prolongs your pain response. A lot of processed foods that you find in the grocery store that are packaged, or frozen have added sugar that can lead to an inflammatory cascade in your body. This not only creates more pain pathways to your brain, but it inhibits your ability to adapt and respond to everyday stress.

If you are accustomed to a lot of sugar in your diet, wean yourself off of it slowly and you will find that you will not crave it as much as you used to. Did you know that in a research study, they found that sugar was just addictive as cocaine in rats!? That is an alarming fact. The less you rely on sugar, the more your pain will decrease.
One thing that you can do is to shop on the perimeter of your grocery store for fresh produce and meats, instead of buying a lot of processed, prepackaged foods. Cut down the sugar and allow your body to start healing!

Do You Have Fibromyalgia?

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

There are 18 potentially tender points important for the diagnosis of fibromyalgia.  To get a diagnosis of fibromyalgia, 11 of 18 tender point sites must be painful when pressed. Reference: www.webMD.com

The diagnostic points are paired locations, one potentially tender point on each side of the body.  Check for tenderness at the locations listed below:

¡       The base of the skull, directly below the hairline

¡       Above the shoulder blades, near where the neck and shoulder join

¡       Between the shoulder blades

¡       On the front of the neck, above the collar bone

¡       On the chest at the second and third costochondral junction (second rib)

¡       Below the elbows

¡       In the lower back, right below the waist

¡       On the hips, right under the hip bones

¡       Behind the knees

If 11, of the 18 possible points are tender, you may have fibromyalgia.  If you would like a more thorough examination, call (303) 394-CARE (2273).

Denver Fibromyalgia

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Why are so many fibromyalgia sufferers seeking our care?  Don’t chiropractors help with spinal problems?

There is a growing body of scientific evidence that shows that the relationship between the spine and nervous system determines how susceptible we are to fibromyalgia. The article below is still another example of why our care can be critical for fibromyalgia in particular.

The clinical syndrome of fibrositis.  Wolfe F, American Journal of Medicine 1986 vol. 81 (suppl 3A) Sept 29, 1986;7-14

Researchers found that 45.9% of people who had fibromyalgia and went to a chiropractor experienced moderate to great improvement.  In the same study, antidepressant medication benefited only 36.3% of those studied and exercise was limited to a 31.8% rate of improvement.

If you hurt all over, feel exhausted all the time, have muscle tenderness and want relief, call (303) 394-CARE (2273).  Let’s talk.  You may have fibromyalgia, and I can help.
