What is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is prevalent across the US. Denver is no different. In our Denver Fibromyalgia Health Center we see patients often that have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia.
Fibromyalgia is a condition that involves diffuse, body-wide pain in muscles, and other soft tissues. The cause is unknown but can be managed very effectively through conservative treatments.
How do I manage my fibromyalgia?
- Get out and move around. Chronic pain can be induced by inactivity. A study published in 2009 in the Journal of Gerontology showed that extreme inactivity in the form of 3 weeks of bed rest had the same physiologic results as 40 years of aging. There was a major decline in both cardiovascular fitness and oxygen utilization after just 3 weeks of bed rest. Exercise not only enhances your endurance, but supplies all your muscles with increased oxygen so they remain strong and healthy.
- Seek emotional support. Do you feel like no one listens to your pain concerns or that people close to you are tired of hearing about it? Have you given up on ever getting rid of your pain? Chronic pain can have a devastating effect on not only your body but your mind as well. Depression can be an unfortunate result of chronic pain and psychosocial therapy has been shown to be one of the most effective coping mechanisms. Find someone to talk to about your pain.
- Make dietary changes. Avoid foods with aspartame (sugar substitute), MSG, caffeine, and other stimulants. All of these things enhance the pain pathways in your brain and make you hypersensitive to pain. Also avoid dairy, yeast, and gluten, which all have an effect on inflammation in your tissues. Your body can react best to dysfunction when it is given what it needs. Ask your chiropractor about the benefits of omega 3 fish oil in reducing inflammation and pain.
- Get checked by your chiropractor. Your body’s natural state of health does not include chronic pain. Chiropractic adjustments realign the spine and re-connect your brain and body, so that you can return to your natural state of health.
Your body has the ability to heal itself. You just have to give it what it needs and let it take you from sickness to health.
